Presenting a SOTA RP Community Adventure

Would you like to play a game? The Shroud of the Avatar Role Players Community would like to invite you to a day of Adventure in New Britannia. On Sunday, February 16th at 1pm US CST, a new Avatar will step into a Lunar Rift, and Umbrae shall be your eyes and ears as well as facilitating your commands into actions as he or she explores the new land.

Best of all, YOU - the community - get to decide who will be the next to arrive in His Majesty's new realm. Please vote for one of the following characters who we be under the community's command as he or she explores the challenges Umbrae is set to provide.

1. Sam (Male). A construction worker.
2. Duncan (Male). A Fisherman.
3. Dana (Female). A Dancer.
4. Irene (Female). An Accountant.

Voting ends February 14th or 3 days after the poll closes. Once a character has been selected a bio will be posted telling the story of how the Adventure begins. Then join us at the start of the game which will take place here on the official forums. A link to the official game thread will be posted here once the game begins.

Feel free to shout out in this thread if you plan on attending the game. You can also cheer for your favorite character and ponder what their backstory might me.

Game Structure
The game will consist of posts on the official game thread, and will much like old school adventure games or tabletop D&D sessions. The Game Master will begin by making a post describing your surroundings and giving a time limit to represent a particular round. Any members of the community, or Players, can take the role of the character by requesting information about objects, giving character actions, even providing dialog or commentary during this round. Once the round is over these actions will be chosen based on “Likes” and their appropriateness to the situation and character, and a new description of the results of those actions will be posted. Some minor actions or questions may receive short responses before the round is over, but most actions will be processed after the round.

We will try to include as many actions as possible to ensure everyone is involved, but be sure to keep the main character in mind and propose actions which make sense. This is an experiment in interactive storytelling which we hope you find enjoyable. The sea was calm as the sun began to set. Duncan felt an uneasiness to the quiet that bothered him. Even the sun seemed to be pulling the horizon over its head as if retreating from some impending doom. The feeling was familiar to him which brought on a mixture of excitement and dread. A hinted memory so distant he could not be sure whether it was just a past dream.

How long had it been? He had been a child the first time. The wind would howl drawing you into the night. Drawn into the circle of stones and the pulsing light and then… falling.

Within moments of nightfall a wind began to brew. The moon seemed to rise quickly as the storm rolled in and the waters turned most foul. Duncan clenched the ship's wheel knowing the night held more excitement than a simple deadly storm. He would not be proven wrong as the ship was quickly broken around him and he plunged into the frigid depths.

Duncan woke on a beach with his ship’s hull mangled before him. The night was calm again with little evidence of the storm that stranded him. He heard the hum right away which rose the hairs on his neck. Turning inland he could see the light between the trees and began stumbling in its direction. Before Duncan laid the circle of stones with the hum of magic and the light from the open gateway. In awe he stood before it.

How long had it been?

Slowly he stepped inside and fell...

That would be cheating - that's a "hidden" combat school

 

That's not cheating, that is making her story suddenly more interesting.

An appropriate dance for the dangers she might face in her time in New Britannia. However, Dana's immediate worries will not involve combat.

Maybe Duncan or Irene, pulling in second, would be more appropriate for the uncertain path ahead of them. Hmm...

 

I vote Duncan. Chris and I need more company down at the docks.

Looks like Duncan has pulled out ahead. I guess a fisherman's use of tools and steady feet may help him on the path ahead.

Poor Irene and Sam not getting the love, but I would not count them out. I wonder how their real world skill will manifest in the world of New Britannia.

 

Play it again, Sam! My construction worker would be a renaissance man that can also play the piano.

 

I wonder what kind of ship Duncan serves on...

 

Duncan is doing quite well. Beginning to look like our new Avatar might be bringing the stench of fish with him to New Britannia. Hopefully he will have want it takes to pass the challenges ahead.

If you are rooting for someone else you might want to start arguing your case to convince those that have not voted to sway your way.

Poor Sam and Irene I bet they could have been contenders.

 

Should have been the female butcher, female firefighter, male beautician and male personal assistant.... do a little role reversal

 

If people enjoy this and enough people are involved then we might have more open options for future games.

Anyone have any opinions on how long rounds should be?

So if I say "You are in a room with a Fish, a Duck and a Pool Cue.": how long would you want to ask questions and state action before the round is over and actions are committed?

15 minutes, an hour, a day?

 

Maybe Duncan is a dock fisherman...

 

I'm still pulling for Sam. Solving stuff with brute force is fun!
