Our current lighting settings for night time assumes tone mapping is on. Many of you have it disabled because it was causing issues at one point.

In R21 we will remove the option to turn it off but in the meantime please turn it back on if you want nights to be playable.

You should really remove the line from the Known Issues in the Patch Notes that is telling folks to turn it off.
    • The screen may go dark unexpectedly in some cases. If this occurs, you can open the video options and turn off Tone Mapping as a temporary fix.

Yes, night is not so dark but then the day is overly bright and washed out.

Also use HDMI and not VGA cables/outputs, VGA is real dark...

The dark nights don't particularly bother me. I like to go to scenes full of resources, because you can see them sparkle better. Wait - I can't see where I'm going, but I can find stuff more easily - hmmm, does that make sense?

Despite tone mapping it is just so dark that many people don't enjoy the nights. I myself would like to turn off the lights in my room in order to better see what's on the screen, but I don't live alone, so that's not possible. There's no way around it - there has to be an option to brighten the night for those who need it, or those people will stop playing.

Oh no please dont remove the option!! I toggle it off and on because I just barely meet the requirements on my computer and sometimes it makes a difference in running smoothly or stop and go while everything else moves around me :) Also sometimes just too bright

Anything that will make the nights not 'jet black' is a plus - so thanks.

Two words "Gamma Correction". Sorry. I hate 'night realism' in games. I like to play my games. Not stumble around in the dark wishing I could play them. :| Thats just me.

To me it seems having tone mapping on disables the bloom effects even though it is enabled under video options. (That is probably a bug I should report) I agree with Lord Barugon, tone mapping during the day washes out some of the color, but it is basically needed at night. If you look at the sunset or rise with tone mapping off it looks much better than with it on.

Edit: it isn't tone mapping that disables bloom, but anti-aliasing.

But when turning it on, the day is too bright (Always turn it off when the sun goes up) as Lord Barugon mentioned in his post. The distant objects are washed out a lot.

Night with tonemapping, I have to agree, is very playable and looks fantastic!

I have requested on a number of threads to have the following included in video options:

Add gamma, contrast and brightness settings to the video options.

---> These options are usually standard in games and I don't understand why they aren't included with SotA. This is especially important for older people who don't see as well as they used to, those who have bad night vision and for those with visual impairments. We don't all see the same and we don't all have the same kind of monitors or video cards. So *please* add these settings and don't disable Tone Mapping for those people who actually prefer to toggle it off and on.

gamma and brightness would be good for playing during the day when you cant draw the windowblinds... ;)
