Are Pets Borken?

I'm really confused about non-combat pets. I have some from pledge rewards, and bought the Golden Eagle in the add-on store because it looks spiffy. In the description it says these pets can follow you wherever you go. However upon logging in to the game and claiming rewards the pets show up as Housing items and I can only drop them in my house as a decoration. Am I doing something wrong? Or do the pets not actually work as advertised?

 

once the pet is placed, u can right click on it and select Follow (and rename, etc)

 

hmm, that begs the question can you have/use the pet rewards without owning a house to place it?

And I actually just found the answer after doing another look through the latest instructions.

So that's how you use them without having to put them down in your house first.

 

Yeah, drag them into your hotbar and you can summon them.

 

I think ever since R31, pets and servants both operate as a single item that can be a pet that follows you, or placed in the house as a decoration.
