Spend a magical afternoon with SotA’s Chris Spears as he explores the Magic System this afternoon on Hangout of the Avatar. The hangout will begin at 4 pm CST today, August 22nd.
This will be another focused, 30 minute Hangout, so I will primarily be taking your pre-submitted MAGIC related questions via Google Hangout at #LBSotA_Hangout. For those with an aversion to Google, you can also submit your question on the comments section below.
Chris, can I win without using magic?
Magic systems in games are usually complicated, and I don’t like complicated.
If I must use magic, I will, but I’ll feel dirty.
Will area of effect spells hurt only the target or friendlies as well, if they are in range?
I really liked how it was implemented in UO, where you had to be careful with your earthquake or chain lightning and you only used those spells in certain situations. I think these powerful spells need to have consequences otherwise you end up with a them being overused and nerfed down to uselessness.
Every spells should have its time and place.
Will it be possible to craft magical items, like a staff with 50 charges of fireballs, and sell them to non-magic folk like Sir Frank KC who posts the comment above?
Will magic spells be utilized within the 2d overhead map system? Examples of this would be teleportation gate spells, group summoning, or some type of barrier to protect the player from attacks.
Will reagents as well as speaking words of power play a role in the magic system, in SoTA as in Ultima 9, for instance?
Id like to know if it would be possible to respec so to speak. like if i chose certain paths would i later be able to change to them to others? mayb pay to respec and price will increase the more you do so mayb. to see what role suits you best.
I might be a weirdo in thinking this, but shouldn’t death and life be switched? As I always saw fire to symolize life more than it did death, and earth seems much more “dead” than fire due to it’s sedentary aspects.
I’m not sure i understand how this card system will work?
If i enter combat i have every time to pick available cards before actually entering combat?
And with these cards coming up both for melee and magic during battle what about the flow of combat?
