A Community Roundtable with Lord British
Curious about consumables? Want to craft delicious delicacies or mix up creative concoctions? Then you should join us this Thursday, September 4th at 3 pm central for our Roundtable Discussion; From Nature to Nutrition. Richard “Lord British” Garriott will host an in depth discussion on the reagents and recipes that will be used in creating food and drink in Shroud of the Avatar. Several of our very own community members will join Richard live during the hangout as I, FireLotus, share your questions and feedback live from the chat room! We’ve also got a few other surprises in store, so be sure to tune in!
Will we be able to make human meat pies? Some of us would like to incorporate human body parts (bones, skin, meat, fat, blood, hair, teeth, ears, etc) into recipes for alchemy (potions), spells (reagents), and of course food
beat me to the question Smack ~smiles~ although i already been told of the answer to this. I am still quite interested in meat pies! “Mrs Raines Pie Shop – Serving people since 1997” =^.^=
hrmm, thats very cryptic lol, but it does not sound good by the context….:( I am hoping for body parts to be used in alchemy!
And meat pies are good!
I wanted to sneak this question in as the first one asked if possible! I wonder if this makes it a TTC (Time To Cannibalism) record of some sort?
I agree smack
Will the size of our avatars (at character creation) dictate any future nutritional needs in-game?
Likewise, will our avatars models get fatter or skinnier or more muscular depending on both our activities and nutritional in-take in-game? This offers a dynamic nutritional model for the “life” of an avatar.
Will reagents be as sophisticated as the recipes in the cooking system?
I mean, magical reagents.
It seems like keeping a great recipe a secret will be very important to some players. Will the game allow players a way to effectively hide the type of tools, ingredients and processes used to create food? Specifically, where people in single player mode be able to break into your kitchen cupboards and see the skillet you’re using to make your apple pies?
Have you considered allowing people to cook without ingredients? (much like casting spells without reagents)
Side note: I would LOVE to see SOTA magic become closer to D&D 2nd Edition rules.
I’m concerned about mages having to load up on carbs… will we end up with all magic users getting really fat? Or do they expend the calories when they cast spells? How much energy does it use to cast spells – does the energy come from within the caster’s body?
Related to recipes and cooking I was wondering about if you could go into more detail about growing our own food for the recipes.
How realistic will this garden have to be, for example:
1. Do we have to water it daily?
2. Are you going to aim for more realistic fruit maturity times?
3. Can we use fertilizers to increase growth speed or quality of fruits enhancing the recipe final quality?
Thanks
Will crafted (cooked or otherwise) food have spoilage and if so, what sort of rates will we see?
Similarly, if crafted food can spoil, does that imply that harvested or gathered resources such as crops (e.g. fruits, veggies) or raw meat have spoilage too?
Rat poison + the bread machine…. British knows that one quite well.
Will we have a variety of tools to use for the purpose of cooking other then just a pot? etc – baking sheets, frying pans, Butcher knives for cutting up meat – spoons for mixing -pie- ingredients together?
Will not eating or drinking have negative effects to our avatar?
Would be interesting if we could incorporate reagents into cooking to create food that gave effects(make it all stack please) Would also be fun if we could come across random recipes in game that gave us new items to cook as well as the ability to learn recipes. Be nice if we could eventually also be able to make wine, as well as beer and hard liquor. So we could in essence throw parties with not just roasts and pies but cakes(different kinds) cookies. Any new recipes could be gradually added in to the game.
I loved the stack system in ou where I could make huge stacks of cooked fish or what ever and lock it down say next to a forge or something. This allowed easy access via a double click to eat my food while being able to look at all that awesomeness. Please tell me ill be able to do that in this system.
Also, would also need drinks like Ginger Beer, Root Beer, Sasafras, after all, many mages would want drinks they could enjoy without being drunk. Which also means we would need glassmaking for the stemware(example would be from Outlander), bottles for the wine, beer, hard liquor. Wont go into more of my ideas here as its for food. Also the Smiths could make the pewter Mugs, plates, etc. The Carpenters could make the wooden bowls mugs.
Will I be able to “brand” my own food and drink? Let’s say I want to make a rare batch of ale or signature breads from my bakery. Will there be a way for me to add a label to the ale or chef’s name to the cooked foods?
+1 I also want to know if we can make our own unique brews.
All what Bayridge said ^^^^^
And
4. Are seasons and location going to be important for crop growth?
5. Will there be some form of genetics so with luck/skill we can get more potent seeds maybe enhancing growth speed or strength or yield of final crop?
6.How is farming/gardening going to be implemented with respect the growing areas. Is everything going to be potable or are areas of outdoor space needed to farm.
Maybe it would be good if you can learn something out of the cooking mechanic.
Some of us can not cook (myself included). But this can be the fun part.
Materials:
1. Utensil being used (skillet, pot, wooden stick rtc)
2. The main “food” (chicken meat, lamb, beef etc)
3. The seasoning (salt, sugar, ketchup, lime leaf etc)
Then the fun part!
1. The timing (i will explain further)
2. The decoration (based on the success of the timing)
So this is the example:
1. Put pot on top of an oven (or even camp fire)
Then depends on the order it gives different result, eg: 2 or 3 or 4
2a. Put water and egg (will give a boiled egg)
2b. If cooked within 2-3 mins: soft yolk egg, otherwise hard boiled egg
3a. Put egg without water (will give scrambled egg)
3b. Use salt once (no change), Use salt twice: salty scrambled egg
3c. Use ketchup instead: ketchuped scrambled egg!
4a. Put a frying pan, cooking oil and beef (steak)
4b. Just beef without cooking oil (grilled steak?)
(allow some timer so if beef placed first then cooking oil within 1 minute, still give option to make a steak)
4c. Timing (timer above the oven?) to take it out may also determine how it is being cooked: rare, medium, well done
I guess it is then opened for feedbacks from those who can actualy cook ! without getting too complex of course, then it is too hard for me to learn.
On the decoration side, maybe more applicable for cakes or layout at dining table.
Eg: Bowl, flour, egg, sugar, water, spoon (to mix) (will produce dough)
then oven (timing will be interesting, longer than “certain” minutes, burnt.)
then some layering (egg, sugar, dye, spoon) – to be confirmed by those who can make cakes!
then choices of cakes design.
That would be more fun and it requires a skill! Some people may get to learn something in game (like me)
Will the region an item is harvested have any effect on consumables? Looking forward to brewing shardfall spirits.
It would be lovely if one could have a tourist cousine. ie local cousine which actually tastes better if made locally.
Earthling tourists wherever they go always experiment with the local cousine and always claims that it is better wherever it is from, it would be a great boon if we could do that in sota as well. Have an Owl’s head pie or Ardoris stew etc, with recipies that can be copied but if actually crafted in it’s specific location would ‘taste’ better.
For minimum effort maximum effect, one could make one-three generic dishes which have the same/similar gfx & template but different recipes.
Take pie for instance, it could have the exact same gfx and the same basic ingredients, but the last ingredient determines which one it is. That way you can play at your cooking station and find that
Add fowl and it’s an “Owl’s head pie”.
Add fish and it’s a “Kingsport pie”.
Add bear and it’s a “Beran’s reach pie”.
Then we can do a cook tourism tour, and if you cook “owl’s head pie” in Owl’s head – it is indeed a little better.
It would be relatively fast from a dev point of view, working from the same template changing three stats only (description, location, last ingredient) but it would really give some depth to cousine and culture.
And in the case of player towns you could delegate that work to the town itself – they take the pie template, change the name & description and maybe change color, then save and submit. (They should not be allowed to change the effect though…)
Other generics could be Stew and Soup for instance.
Best wishes
Then in future episodes you could have food-drop effects related to the towns virtues/culture. Maybe eating a Beran’s reach pie from Beran’s reach has a 1% drop effect of a buff to strength?
Or an Ardoris Stew would have a detriment 1% drop of “bad bowels” with a decreased move speed?
Is this recipe chat today limited to edible goods? If not, I’d like to hear more about the dye recipes that LB touched on the other day. Is it an alchemy skill? Will dyes be consumable 1-use items to keep them in demand? Does higher skill = rarer colors? etc.
This is all so complex and deep. Im intrigued and scared of it at the same time. It could run the risk of being so complex its offputting to some. I dont care about food like some. Ad long as im satiated and not poisoning myself the nuances dont matter to me unless i can make a stew of my enemies carcass that gives me buffd/powers. Then it turns into awesome. Long live chaos.
I was a bit distressed to see “strawberry juice”.
It should instead be:
Strawberry(s) -> Strawberry pulp/puree (for pies, jams, etc)
Strawberry(s) + Milk = Milkshake!
This works fine with the 3 fruits you presented, as you can’t make apple milkshake or grape milkshake.
Bananas were also mentioned in the cooking part (banana bread), that could also be turned into milkshake.
I’d also like to see Cocoa Beans, so we can make chocolate!
