Greetings Avatars,
The winter season has set in and we’re beginning preparations to celebrate the arrival of what is going to be an exciting 2018! We’re announcing this release’s postmortem telethon with new holiday Stretch Goal Items ready to be achieved, Prizes to give away, and more informative Developer Deep Dives. And all of this is coming up fast on January 8!
As was started with the R48 telethon, we’ve changed the format for these livestreams. We will be somewhat going back to briefer but more focused Deep Dives. Also, we will be focusing more on related questions to those Deep Dives. See below on what questions we will and will not be taking.
LIVESTREAM SCHEDULE (Central Time Zone)

Please do NOT post questions containing:
- More than 3 questions in total
- Bugs or other problems best posted in the bug forums
- “When is this coming” or anything related to schedule (for those answers please refer to our quarterly updates or our post release plans)
- Questions with more than a couple of sentences. Please keep them brief! We will likely understand the context of your interest, so just ask the question and we’ll be able to respond.
For bug reports and extra idea suggestions, please use the forums for this purpose.
A Final Thought: We see a LOT of repeat questions and requests. Please consider reading one of the other missed question posts, watching one of the previous post mortems, reading one of the post mortem transcripts, and/or reading our Post Episode 1 plan post before posting a question. Your question might have already been answered.
Keep an eye on @ShroudofAvatar for updates before, during, and after the livestream. See you on Twitch at 3:00 PM CT on January 8!
Happy Holidays, Avatars! See you next year!
Q1: Could we please get some Obsidian themed Robes and Staves?
Q2: Could we please have a way to flag for pvp but not show up on the nearby player list? (Masks?)
Q3: Could we please get new pavers that could be used indoors? (i.e. Obsidian titles that show the symbols of the Obsidian Septagram of Dominion)
Q1: Could you please tell us exactly what purpose the Death Penalty (xp loss on deaths) serves ?
Great Question. I thought it was to slow down skill advancement but it sems more to just be a death penalty. Would be nice to know just what it is and why?
First Answer I received on forum was:
to prevent cheating! As we know from Chris’ workblog, it can’t!
Second Answer: Death should have a meaning!
Third Answer – darkstarr – “It’s the price for classless system!”
It’s okay to have more meaning in death. What’s not okay is the calculation in REAL TIME (24 hour).
The death decay pool shouldn’t raise while we are not in game. A calculation in in game time would be more fair …
Agree here 100%
is the current cooking skill in its final form or a place holder? I would like something more interesting like each ingredient having a buff and the amount of that ingredient used determining the strength of that buff.
are kobolds working on refrigerator tech?
will you please introduce some randomness in to telethon rewards i.e. sometimes having items come in different colors and it being random what color you get when claiming reward.
Q1: Could we please get some Obsidian themed Bows and Armour Sets (like virtue flame armour set)?
Q2: Could we please get paint that we could use to change colour of the outside/inside of houses. For example, white paint to change outside/inside colour of Obsidian Tower houses to white?
Q3: Could we please get village and town size Obsidian houses that are not towers?
With Launch Candidate only 3 months away, do you plan on launching with the same placeholder harvestable tree graphic that has been ingame forever? There are only two types of harvestable trees, pine and maple. Sounds like a low hanging fruit to make them look different at least….
1) What is the timeline for ripping the “teleport and recall” scroll band-aid off of game? In other words, it has been mentioned that we will not be able to teleport infinitely with zero cool-down (scrolls), and there will be meaningful restrictions on fast travel, etc. 2) When will these restrictions begin, or has this idea been reworked, if so, what’s the new idea? (hint, someone mentioned party summoning as thing?)
3) Will the friends list ever solely be for interacting with friends and not for (practically) free transport to the far corners of the world at a moment’s notice?
Question 1: Are you hoping to be able to further increase the Deco Limits for POTs with further performance enhancements?
Question 2: Why do video games ALWAYS drop on Tuesdays? Why is this so immutable a tradition that you’ve altered your 4+ year release schedule to accommodate it?
It’s from mobile marketing, Tuesdays always seemed to be better for games to get higher in the various App Store charts for some reason.
1. Is it too soon to ask for the countdown timer to be added to the telethon post?
Question 1: Story – Now that the main story is done and quite polished, are we going to see a large number of new side quests come online to provide things for players to do until Episode 2?
Question 2: Story – Other than the main storyline, how much work has been/will be done to seed background information into the world? For example, lore in books and scrolls, conversations that involve historical figures, lost objects that might clue in observant players, etc.
Question 3: Black Sun – Thanks for all the work you guys have done to provide full translation and a website for the Russian community. How do you plan to market Shroud of the Avatar in the countries you serve (Russia and China, I believe), and how is this different from marketing in the United States?
Follow up to Browncoat’s Question 1) Please give us an idea of how “many” side quests, or “hours” of side quests, any metric you feel would be helpful in setting expectations for your players.
1) Will the option to enter the town at any of the discovered locations be coming to POTs, if yes, when?
2) What is the timetable to bring boss monsters into the remaining Tier 5 zones (crag foothills, etc)?
3) What are you planning to do to turn the shardfalls (pvp zones) into locations that players will want to risk entering?
Q1: Would it be possible to add an attic to the Viking inn to match functionality with the roof access that the other special inns have (Ie. Obsidian, gothic)?
Q2: Would it be possible to add some basic armor to loot pools on enemies like the weapons and stuff?
Q3:The viking barbarians are dedicated to totem animals (bear, wolf, draogn etc. Are you planning on making any actual animal totems to place in their camps/craftables for players? I think it would be wonderful.
Thank you for your time.
Will we ever have “one world” instead of loading screens between Novia and The Hidden Vale?
@Arturius Magnus What do you mean by that?
He’s referring to how the game is divided into “instances”.
The game will never be one contiguous world where you never have to load from one area to another. It’s simply not possible within the confines of the game engine and playability.
Chris has commented on this more than once in previous telethons/post-mortems.
I’m just curious about the difference between a player and a big boss monster.
Q1. With rough numbers off the top of your head, what are the STR, DEX, INT, DA, and DR of a big boss, monster for example the Southern Grunvald Barrens Dragon?
Q2. Does this boss have any active defensive skills too, for example Dodge, Parry, or Block?
Q3. Is there a good way to tell what type of magic resistance a big boss monster has?
Thanks!
Q2: Are there any combo’s that are available (other than Hamstring) that don’t show up in Glyph Combo’s ?
Can you give us any details about “The Machine” that will be introduced into the game for PvP?
Do you have any details yet or will you get opinions from the player base to use in its creation?
Q1) Could we get Nested POT access on map hosted towns entrance list? (just the default entrance) This would allow player to save one hop into pot and save on server side resources of always having to load / unload additional scene.
Q2) Can we get special public chests for doing treasure for hunts that notify the POT owner on login if items were removed so we know we have to restock.
Q3) Can we get spell books, mystical items as another caster option vs a wands/staffs?
Can there be a title of glyph master for those who have decks with 200 glyphs?
Can there be a repeatable quest for turning in crafted items that produces Producer XP?
Are there plans to increase Producer XP?
I would hope that once they add whatever mechanism Chris decides on for “crafting decay” that we will see the Daily craft xp return, and better tuning of craft xp gain when they start adding refining skills.
Can you please make it so that the housing UI is always visible when in decorating mode and closing the housing UI will turn off decorating mode?
I think I like this idea…
Also, can you please add Dodge to the Character Sheet?
Last question: How about capping the amount of resistance you get from attunement to maybe to 20 or 30? That way, if you train those skills up to high level then you’re doing it to get more power in those skills and not simply for the resistance.
That would effectively nerf the resistance you are able to get across the board for every school as there is no way to get resist in some schools without the attunement.
Is there a reason why the major bosses, Dragons, Torc Dawl etc. are now hitting with 500 + – 800+ Critical Damage frequently all within 3 – 4 seconds? It appears Mid-Level Parties of 8 people can no longer kill these Bosses. Is this intended so only high level players are the only ones who can Solo or do in Pairs?
Can we have a bit more clarification on the Map thing. And I assume this goes active in Release 50. Not sure how this is gonna work. I assume its per account. Is someone going to add things in the scenes like there used to be or do we have to do this for our own personal maps.
Q1: could we get storms that would come through our towns so that if we were on a body of water we would get large waves that would cause the boats docked to toss and turn? If we were living in a boat I think this would be a fun feature to have. thanks.
Q1; Chris mentioned that the gear you wear does not impact you as much as the skill you have so my question is why is that so? That statement to me means that you can cut a steak with a knife and the knife you use does not matter that much. Try to cut a GOOD piece of steak with a butter knife and then use a very well made knife such as a Wusthof or Henkel knife and tell me they are the same and the knife has little impact in the cutting aspect. IF gear has little impact then you have now killed the player crafted market by your statement.
Q2: Gaining producer pool points take forever to raise, 500 exp per click and usually 2 clicks per minute if your lucky to a rate of at best 60k Producer exp per hour. Fighters and supporting groups can gain over 800k per hour so why the difference? If I can gain 3.2 Million exp per hour why not a comparable level of exp gain for Producer pool points?
Q3: Will there ever be different metals, leathers, wood, in game besides the ones we have now? In UO there were 8 different of base metal materials to build upon.
With launch fast approaching I’m a bit concerned about the difficulty of some parts of the main storyline, particularly for single player online and offline. Specifically, the kobold camp arena, Grannus Colossus and especially the obsidian forge. The main storyline does not provide enough XP to reach a sufficient level to meet these challenges (more so for non-magic users). One must grind for many levels in some cases.
1. Are there plans to address this in time for launch?
2: (Semi-related) What is the current status of offline companions? They are only vaguely mentioned as ‘launch content’ in the Q1 update but not mentioned in any of the release previews.
3: Because you know how we need more options! I’d like the option to optionally not see ghostly skeletons laying around everywhere I go. (Apart from having the option to laugh at how many people died in an area does seeing these really serve any purpose?)
Sorry that first one was a bit long wasn’t it? Let me see if I can condense it down to 2 sentences…
Question 1 (revised)..
Most of the main storyline can be complete solo without the need to grind levels (by doing quests) with a few exceptions (spoiler alert: notably the obsidian forge which requires a group). Are there any plans to bring these exceptions (ie Grannus Colossus & kobold camp arena) in-line with the difficulty of the rest of the main storyline?
I think that’s technically 2 sentences right?
Well Lum pretty much answered question #1 on the forum. (Though I think more folks might like to hear the answer live to put them at ease.)
Maybe I should think of a new #1 question?
Q: Suggestion for improving the attack bar. Add filters to each OPEN slot to control the type of glyph which can randomly appear in that position. The filter would be a list of check boxes for each glyph type: Attack, buff, debuff, heal. The user can then select any combination of glyph types which can fill the spot. This way you could force certain glyph type to appear in known spots making game play easier, while preserving the random nature of open slots.
Q: In this release, the gloves for the Truth/Love/Courage armor sets are part of a specialized random encounter that prove difficult for a few of us. Will this quest be made easier?
Follow-up Q: Will future pieces of armor for the Truth/Love/Courage sets increase in difficulty so that only those who group or are high-level can obtain them?
Q: Is there a way that you can increase the chance of a recipe drop by building in a passive % increase into the main crafting skill itself?
(Example: Jack the GM Tailor has an additional 10% chance to get a tailoring recipe drop from an appropriate mob, with a max of 15% at Tailoring Skill Level 200)
R49 has been highly unstable on OS X: hard crashes requiring reboot, client crashes, gross memory leaks and graphics configuration problems. What will Port be doing to make OS X and Linux clients production-quality stable by launch?
1. So I was wondering about the Non-combat Tool bars, is this something we can look forward to? it would be very useful in are day to day non-combat activities.
2. Having the new visual effects is great, they look sweet. Although trying to walk around in first person view is very hard to see with the Heart of Sorrows on. Could there be a way to turn off some of the visual effects, as a custom interface option?
3. I have played many MMO game and one of the things that I enjoyed was being able to view gear and or weapons on my Toon before purchasing them. Could we get a preview buy window?
As a new player, getting started in this game can be a bit overwhelming. Once I was helped by other players it became more manageable. Is there a way we as new players can give some sort of feedback on the helpers, so they can get recognition, and or some sort of prize? There by sparking more players to help other players, and new players not wanting to play the game because of not being able to make the transition.
QUESTION: Could a filter be added to the recipe book so only recipes you have all the components for in your backpack are shown? Material highlighting is already in for the recipe book, so can we take it one step further?
QUESTION: Could recipes be highlighted on vendors/in inventory lists. Example: Red text if you already know them, green if it’s unlearned. Having the colour on the item text would give you an idea of which recipes to buy, at a glance, instead of having to tooltip over each one
I just discovered the R48 missed questions thread, please ignore the 2 above, Starr has answered them already
Will Overland Merchants (ones we should see on the overland map someday) randomly carry rare recipes for people to purchase?
Free Shandy Chapman!
Q1: what kind of yield can we expect from the upcoming refining skills? i.e. at GM you have 100% chance for an extra ingot, batch size is 100 at GM etc etc
Q2: What will the testing process be after “launch”. Will there be more in house testing of the system before they hit live or will the QA server be available for backers for more than a week etc.
Q3: I know this has been asked asked multiple times but since recipes exist for gold / silver scraps (and you are still able to purchase these recipes) when will the scraps be available in game as drops?
Q:after seeing the beautiful koy-fish in celestis, can we have a fish tank for inside or a fish pond for outside the housing?
Q: I believe one of the goals for overworld encounters was that roads would generally be safer, but the further away you got the more dangerous it was/more encounters you would have. Unfortunately, in the current implementation, the vast majority of encounters are bandits or skeletons that roam the roads; its generally safer (but slower) to go offroading. Is it still the plan to make roads be safer, possibly by adding some roaming NPC “guards” to chase off those bandits for a bit?
Q: The Norgard Barbarians now seem to be the source of animal hat recipes. There is a Boar Hat coming with the new animals, but will we see the Dragon Skull Helm as well? Will this be a special version of the Bone Plate Armor, just with a dragon skull instead of a lich one?
Q1 Armor Set Bonus. Any news on that topic and maybe changes. Could we get seperate boni for leather, cloth, chain, plate?
Q2 Armor and Stealth. Any chance it could play a role in how successful a character is at stealthing? Maybe make stealth “fizzle”?
Q3 Could we get limits on max move speed? Stacking fleet flute and other movement effects give insane amounts of speed and mobility. Is that intended?
In addition to Q3 will movement speed effect fizzle chance or attack dmg? Increased for melee due to momentum and decreased for magic perhaps?
Q1: My guildmates were wondering if a subterrainian level could be added to deep ravenswood, particularly in multiplayer mode, where more obsidian bears and obsidian wolves could be found, and the entrances could be at the bear cave and wolf den?
Q2: Just curious if I could get feedback on my dev+ concept for a ‘combo glyph slot’ and increasing the combat deck to 12 slots? The thread is in the dev+ skills and combat section “Combo Slot in the deck system”
Q3: Also curious who created the ‘ghost mode’ silouette/environment and if ghost mode stuff could be included in the dev+ assets?
subterranean that is
on your Q2. yes please!
a combo slot (draw cards stack on top of a static root) would make the deck system really come alive. Right now the incentives are to only have 1-2 draw slots, and everything else static. It’s really lame.
Is there any way that we can have more hairstyle options? Specifically long flowing hair?! I want to be a princess damnit! ? ?
Q1 I have started rolling a mage and was wondering if the robes are balanced, being a chest/leg item, against a cloth chest and cloth leg combo. PS Robes should not have leg ware under them. Would you ware underwear with a kilt?
Q2 can all store/telethon items be converted to pattern salvage items? There are several things I would like to use for reshaping that do not produce patterns when salvaged.
Q3 More of a whine/request than a question. Once multiple users are available on an account can we please have separate values for virtue and separate HUD configurations? I don’t want my evil twin Warrior to affect my Virtuous Paladin, what ever that may be.
-Now that the extra chr slots are coming would it be possible for us to use them as “pets/companions” in online modes? As a group party…
-If yes to #1, then can you give them basic AI like in Ultima 7, where the party leader (me) could give them “orders” like to attack at range or up close with melee or to heal other party members with magic?
-If NO, then why not?
At the moment PVP is more or less pointless, and the reward is pretty much junk. Will you add some kind of ranking system which will make it way more fun to do PVP and put more meaning to it?
ALCON,
Warding Imbalance:
I respectfully request that the developers please take a look at the warding imbalance as it pertains to PVP combat. For Example: A well developed polearm user with heavy armor can equip Earth warding against a level 116 Earth mage with Earth skills at 120-130 and easily defeat the Earth mage with over half their HP left. Whereas the Earth mage cannot equip physical warding to provide the same protection. Sure the Mage could use slot or few in their deck for defensive stance, fortified defenses, shield of crystal etc.. but these are temporary buffs that take up a potential combat DPS slot, thereby reducing the amount of DPS output required in PVP. Comparing the two is similitude to apples and oranges. This imbalance would require avatars whom are interested in being competitive to reclass/respec into the “warding” melee build to hope for victory and winning the season prize of store credit and other goodies. This essentially pigeon holes avatar builds into this specific class and denies players the path of their choice. Thank you for your time and attention.
Respectfully,
Theraysa Claire

Q1: Can we get the capability to make Exceptional(+1) food and potions that slightly increase the buffs? And perhaps even +2 with a very low chance starting from Cooking/Alchemy lv100+
Question: Can we please have our own loot received logged please, we can see others loot in the log, but not our own. Thanks for the great game and keep up the amazing work!! Peace!
Q1: Will there be any new music, such as combat/battle music? As is, the scene music doesn’t change when fighting, E.g. Torc Dawl.
Q2: How about add-ons, such as a high-res texture pack, or a “Speech Pack” like in the old days once the main story line dialog is complete? I.e. add VO for the main storyline quest?
Q3: Will there be new achievements (Steam or otherwise?) for release?
Q1: Will there be more options to look ragged? The rotten flesh cloak is excellent but it would be great to have very tattered clothes to go with it. Rags that look ready to fall apart (or already are!).
Q2. Any chance that ornate or virtue versions of the barbarian clothing will make their way into the add on store at some point in the future?
Q3. Could we get some more modern looking avatar hairstyles or have the secrets of hair gel been forever lost in the fall?
Q1. Could you please also make a craftable Log Cabin in 2-story?
Q2. Does salvaging Iron Scimitar weapons yield a Scimitar pattern? If not, would you please?
Q3. Correct me if I am mistaken, but currently, the Innkeeper has no way to control sharing the lot deco limit. For lots with an Inn, could there be a room item (storage) limit versus all tenant items add up to the total lot limit, with perhaps a larger limit for the lobby? And make it so that tenants have use of the lobby but not place items?
Q1: is there any plan to modify the mini group interface? or reduce the dimension of UI elements? Or remove/reduce/scale elements of the UI? have you ever tried to play SOTA on a 30 ish monitor? it is actually impossible to play an healer with this UI. Costantly moving eyes between skillbars / top left corner for the grp HPs. It is against any basical rule of what a User Interface is meant to be. the buff icons get over the focus/hp bars. Why not a copy a daoc/gw/eso whatever Mini grp ideas? 20 years old and rocking like rockscience
Q2: Which Hardware is needed to play a 3440×1440 with all settings maxed up? actually a i5 4670k @4ghz, SLI 1080 TI, 32 GB is totally unplayable unless you remove Shadows / Ambient Occlusion. On a 2 thousand green bucks RIG. everyone i pulled here left for performances

Q1:
When two or more PVP players meet each other on the overland map, Can we pull them into an encounter scene? It is just the same as when we meet monsters on the overland map.
Q2:
I hope that the respawn number and respawn speed of the monster in the Multiplayer online mode is much higher. For example, triple the number of respawn monsters and reduce the respawn time to about 10-15 seconds. Also, Can we cancel the extra % increase in XP for the PVP player in Multiplayer Online Mode?
Q3:
I hope that we have more types of Light Armor Clothing especially the helmet. We shouldn’t have only one type of Cloth Helmet.
Q1: Would you please give an update on the future of the Stats API (Elasticsearch).
Q2: Could you update the template for the Schedule Update to include two new sections, one
on the Stats API and the other on the Web Map content (two area that are not part of any
release).
Q3: Would you please give an update on how the maps (Sotamap) are comming along.
Q1) What are the current thoughts on how long gear lasts before needing to be replaced .
Q2 ) When will the advertising campaign begin?
Q3) when are sets going to require more than 1 piece (chest) to determine what armor class your wearing, part 2 of that when will dual wand setups be replaced as mentioned last telethon?
Hi, team thank you for a great game I have enjoyed playing and making videos for the last year and I look forward to the next year in the game.
Q. is there any chance of a tailoring dummy to easily display our items of clothing in the game?
Nice skeggy,
I like the idea of a dress form, maybe an ornate dress form for display in the tailoring workshop.
Q 1) Ok come on what’s with the torches?
Q 2) No really, a torch with 0/0 durability?
Q 3) Is the torch thing an attempt to mire us in garbage loot to slow progression?
It is a conspiracy to get us to accidentally delete our primary gear.
Q: How long will the hangout where you sign all physical goods be?¨
Q1: Differents online game modes and consesual pvp divide the population of the game too much, this make pvp encounter one of the rarest event in the game. Will we ever see a revision of selective multiplayer mode and consensual pvp to help also pvp-only players to have fun?
Q2: Can we expect to see some meaningful skill also for the bludgeon tree like polearm’s Skewer and sword’s Coup the grace? For example: Break Weapon could disarm the opponent for a certain amount of time.
Q3: To balance the combat system what do you think about capping the number of schools for every Deck (Players can train all, but only 3 Skill Trees will be active)? In this way if someone want to use for example life healing, will have only 2 additional schools available.
This can be also useful to avoid buffing decks and resistance in all schools at the same time.
Q: Will you remove the possibility for flagged pvp players to switching into friends/single mode to avoid exploits in pvp situation?
Q: What do you think about adding more special rewards and resources (releated to pvp) in pvp zones like you did with “The Fall”‘s artifacts?
Q: To encouraging specializations, what do you think about increasing significantly the level requirement for advanced skills?
1.Will we have CF Vendors available for sale on Coto vendors ?
2.Will we have mining,gathering… enchants/masterworks on gear ?
1. What determines the brightness of a light for deco? The new snow globe is nice and bright while the geometric lights from the add on store barely light up anything. Will you be doing a pass on them before launch or should we bug report?
2. Since the oldest assist, tress, are finally being updated, can currant backers get a memento of them as a deco?
3. Can someone please crack the whip at Atos, his daily blog has become monthly again!!!
Question: Any plans on developing a “Find My Stuff” tool that will allow us to search for items among all our homes/lots? Or maybe something that just shows what is on that particular lot similar to how the Bank shows what is in your bank for that location.
Will there be Ettins in SOTA?
Something like the following
http://www.uoguide.com/Ettin
1. Will the housing rental system eventual be more automated ingame without the need to physically meet other avatars.
2. Commission Free Vendors. Will there be a option to set a limit on listings and a Tax Rate on sales for tenants.
3. Home Deeds. Is it possible to move or rotate homes in the future. Do they have to always be placed in the centre of a lot?
Keep up the awesome work.
Metal
But I have Multi personality. How do I play each one of my personalities?
Q1: We are playing the Avatar, in A new separate world separate from earth. Why are almost all the wild animals in this world the same ones we see on earth instead of some creative content?
Q2: A lot of effort went into making sure we move faster on paths on the overworld map. Why is it we cannot lock ourselves to the trail so we don’t slip off these wriggling and winding trails to lose travel speed?
Q3: THe map tool we once had was acquired by Portalarium and stripped down in a big way taking away most of its functions. Will we ever get those functions back?
Q1: It is great to have more loot – but: why should so many enemies have crafting recipe with them?
Finding also Recall and Teleport Scrolls is great, but there seems no more need to craft or buy them …
Q2: Could we have “Banish Undead” working like it was intended:
like other mass attack spells (Meteor Shower, Ring of Fire …) to hurt more enemies?
Actual it works like Searing Ray.
Q3: Could you consider, that a (Grand)Master of crafting receives an >50% chance to craft an exceptional (+1) item – instead of only about 30% chance? The next crafting levels are hard enough …
Important Q4:
Could you please think about NOT to calculate the death decay pool in REAL TIME.
