As the devs said that they want to give the new overland map some more love for R5, what do you expect from the map for the next release?
How do you think the devs will improve it for R5?

I hope we can, at least, try the old one. I was bussy in the pre-R4 and I didnt try it. And about "Main Continent Scenes" I hope we will se any big city with a lot of npcs stuff and houses and some interesting personality. I dont know what to expect about combat still.

I have no expectations. Hope is the breeding ground for disappointment. :p

Seriously though, I have no idea what to expect.

I suspect we won't see the old 3d map back for R5. As for the new map well I can hope we will see some significant improvements what these might be though I have no idea.

Don't expect major improvements as our focus has been on skills and combat.

Somehow I guessed as much... But then when will the decision be made to keep the new map or revert back to the old 3D map? Or will the new paper map be kept by all means?

Well, if we could see a very good improvement in the skill and combat will not be that bad. Just I will try not to look at the map. :p

Somehow I now doubt that they considered to go back to the old 3D map... I guess we are stuck with the Paper Mario childrens pop up book-map... :(
Somehow this could destroy the whole game for me...

Paper Mario is far better. XD Main problem is that the map looks totally amateur for me. And I agree that will be important, since this doble map system is already the most polemic point of the game. Even there is much more consensus here than in the PVP polemic.

Well I am disappointed that not much has been done with the map, but at the same time glad to hear about the work being done with skills and combat. I guess for next release I will just have ignore the map as much as possible lol.

I'd like to say what I'd like to see for the future of the map.

    1) Give me a character I control using my standard wasd movement. - I don't like the click to move style (auto pilot mode).

    2) Bring back fog of war or allow me to move the camera around.

    3) Make encounters or interesting things happen in the overland map. (things will draw you into a scene, or can even capture you and move you into a new scene elsewhere)

If you have a dual scale map system it's vital that you make both maps fun to play in, otherwise just make some sort of fast travel feature (Where I click anywhere on the map for where I want to go with near instant travel speed) because I want to spend minimal time in the overland map.

    4) I still prefer the old version that kept styling the same, but I can live with this cartoony thing if it's interesting.

What I like about this idea is it gives lots of scope for loads of new maps on each hex, I think originally its design was because of time constraints and team size, As building everything in 3d would have been a massive undertaking for a team of this size. I liked the original look of the map better with the little avatar running around, But obviously its a place holder for a future release, As Lum said.
But they could put in some exciting features like in Baldurs Gate where you did not know if you would reach your destination without getting Waylaid by bandits, Give the red sash guys something to do!
Instanced attacked travel 3d maps, Drakensang did a similar thing.

I expect the developers to have dumped the paper map look entirely in favour of what we were promised.

Unfortunately not and I assume that we will never see the 3D overland map again. But hey, Paper Mario, browsergames and childrens pop up books sell really well or so I heard...

But Paper Mario games (or even Super Mario World map :p) may sound like dumb, but they have a very high quality standard.

I guess we'll have to wait a few days to see what is unveiled with R5. It sounds like some minor tweaks to the current 'paper' map system. We shall see.

I have no idea what to expect and I'm sure the developers will do a great job.

I went back and played some old UO and while I was playing the thought struck me that even if the overland map was like the old UO where we could all show up together and run around this huge map to various places that it wouldn't be so bad. Overland would be almost like playing old UO but we'd have the benefit of zooming in to local areas for our rich immersion into the new Shroud settings.

In any case, that's my ramblings for the night. I'm sure that the developers will be even more creative by the time they're done . :)
