14 years ago Shadowbane already had NPC guards for towns. Now its 2017 and Portalium says they cant "code it"?

What purpose do PvP towns serve if not enabling you to attack (or be attacked by) everyone in town? Once you put that "safety zone" (which is contradictory to the purpose of flagging PvP), PvP towns would merely be regular towns where some people are slightly more likely to be flagged.

Why have PvP towns as a feature at all, then?

If you role-play your character reading or sleeping in his bed, why can't I role-play an assassin?

If you don't see the appeal to settle your home in a PvP towns, that's your prerogative. As it stands, the rules of engagement are universal across the entire game:
    • PvP exclusive zones enables PvP to all players.
    • PvP can be manually enabled by seeing the Oracle.
    No exceptions; clean and efficient.

Well, Shadowbane wasn't done by Richard Garriott and his crew. RG has mentioned a few times before that he doesn't really play other RPGs but his own... so...
